$80 Million Available for School Improvements
Applications are now open for a program that will award $80 million in grants to schools for implementing improvements to schools in the areas of energy efficiency, clean air, and renewable energy.
The Renew America's Schools program, administered by the United States Department of Energy, will award individual grants from about $500,000 to $15 million, depending on the project. Local education agencies, schools, and nonprofits are eligible to apply.
The purpose of the program is to fund school improvement projects that "maximize the benefits of the clean energy transition as the nation works to curb the climate crisis, empower workers, and advance environmental justice." DOE is looking for projects that are replicable and scalable, involve partnerships, focus on disadvantaged communities, and impact health and student learning positively.
The program opened about two weeks ago. The deadline for concept papers is Jan. 26, 2023. Final applications are due April 21, 2023.
Eligible uses of funds include: "energy efficiency (envelope, HVAC, lighting, controls, etc.), ventilation, renewable energy, alternative vehicles, and alternative fuel vehicle infrastructure improvements," according to information posted by the DOE.
