Microsoft Revamps Education Licensing


Microsoft this week released updated institutional licensing terms for education customers. Microsoft's subscription licensing programs for education, collectively known as the Campus Agreement and School Agreement (CASA), now offer two additional benefits--home usage and evaluation rights--as well as several other changes in the areas of license renewal, buyouts, prorating, and other program terms.

CASA 3.5 now includes the ability for education customers to access the HUP Microsoft Software Assurance benefit, which allows users to obtain licensed copies of most Microsoft Office desktop programs for installation on a home computer. It also adds evaluation rights for downloading trial software from Microsoft Volume License Services.

Additional changes to the program include:

  • An option to "step up" to higher editions of products at the end of a three-year license;
  • The ability to prorate prices after the initial order;
  • A new stand-alone Student Option;
  • Reduced price for buying out of a three-year license;
  • Elimination of the Work at Home (WAH) license ordering requirement; and
  • An update to the eligible PC definition no longer requiring all Pentium II machines to be counted.
