Successful Reader Brings Audiobooks to Reading Intervention

Renaissance Learning has launched a new reading intervention, one that takes a "book club" approach to reading participation. The new system, Successful Reader, incorporates audiobooks from and includes guided independent reading practice, various guides, and interactive online content.

Successful Reader is built around Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader reading comprehension software and combines the company's STAR Reading progress monitoring software with instructional materials targeted toward struggling readers.

"Struggling readers need to engage in thoughtful responses to engaging stories. They need to be motivated and experience success," said Roger Farr, former president of the International Reading Association, who helped develop the system. "It's also critical that key reading comprehension strategies all good readers use are modeled for them and that they are given the opportunity to practice these skills with self-selected literature. Successful Reader takes struggling readers into an audio and print book club where all of these things happen with well planned, easy-to-implement teaching strategies."

Other Successful Reader components include:

  • An MP3 player with speaker;
  • Audiobooks provided by AudibleKids;
  • 400 trade books (20 copies of 20 titles);
  • 20 student guides; and
  • Two teacher guides.
