Los Angeles Library Debuts Online High School Program

Angelenos can now earn their high school diploma through their local library, thanks to a new program offered through the Los Angeles Public Library.

The library has partnered with education publisher Gale to deliver Career Online High School, a distance learning program that allows students to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate. The library program, the first of its kind in the country according to Gale, is an opportunity to meet an important need in the community, said John Szabo, the City Librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library

"The population of adults without a high school diploma is as high as 60 percent in some of the geographic areas served by our library system," said Szabo in a prepared statement. "Our mission is to educate and empower every individual in our city's diverse communities. This is a game-changing program for our library and a life-changing program for our patrons."

Career Online High School is a nationwide program that offers courses in career training and core academic subjects through public libraries. The school is accredited through AdvancED Accreditation Commission. Students can transfer in up to 14 units of high school credits from an accredited institution. The program includes career-planning and academic support.

The school is open now for enrollment. Participating libraries offer scholarships to those that qualify. Additional information is available online.
