Learning Site Taps Social Media To Share Educational Resources

A new site launched in beta Thursday that combines educational resources with social media. The site, Flashcard Friends, uses Web 2.0 technologies to allow students (and teachers) to create skill practice materials (i.e. electronic flashcards) and share them with other users.

Flashcard Friends provides a library of user-created flashcards that can be searched and browsed by subject. It also includes simple tools for users to create additional flashcard sets. These sets can be shared, tagged, rated, and bookmarked using the site's Web 2.0 social networking features. The sets can also be sorted by school, teacher, subject, class, and other parameters.

The flashcards themselves can include text, pictures, and sounds (which can be recorded on the fly), and tests can be automatically generated for practice using a number of test types (multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false, matching, etc.). There's also a feature for speaking words on vocabulary/spelling practices.

Flashcard Friends is open to the public now at no charge and is advertising-free.
