Surface Tablet with Windows 8 Pro Arriving in January

Microsoft has revealed details about its forthcoming Surface tablet device running Windows 8 Pro.

According to a blog entry posted today by Panos Panay, general manager of Microsoft Surface, the upcoming models will start at $899 and will begin shipping in January.

The new models will be different in some ways from the models running Windows RT. The Windows 8 Pro versions will be powered by an Intel Core i5 CPU and will feature full 1080p HD resolution (1,920 x 1080) on the 16:9 10.6-inch display. Other features include:

  • A USB 3.0 port;
  • The ability to drive an external display at resolutions up to 2,560 x 1,440 via Mini DisplayPort;
  • Support for Surface pen input with palm blocking; and
  • Optional touch or type covers.

According to Panay, the Surface running Windows 8 Pro will support all Windows 7 applications.

The Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available in two base configurations: a 64 GB model for $899 and a 128 GB model for $999. Additional details can be found on Microsoft's Surface portal.
