Epson Rolls Out Interactive Touch Projector

The Epson BrightLink 595Wi supports touch-based interactivity for as many as six simultaneous users.

Epson has launched seven new projectors for education, including three LCD-based interactive projectors (one of which supports pen-free interactivity) and four ultra-short-throw models.
The new devices, unveiled today at the FETC 2014 conference, taking place in Orlando, FL through Friday, include the BrightLink 575Wi, 585Wi and 595Wi interactive models. The 5-series Wi models are LCD-based projectors that offer WXGA resolution (1,280 x 800) and that can be mounted as close as 12.2 inches from the projection screen (producing a 100-inch image). The 585Wi and 595Wi offer brightness ratings of 3,300 lumens, wile the 575Wi offers a brightness of 2,700 lumens.
The units are designed to be used in conjunction with classroom devices, including student devices like iPhones, iPads and Android-powered tablets and phones. With the use of EasyMP software, the projectors can display content from these devices (as well as document cameras, PCs, DVD players and other devices) wirelessly. Multiple devices can be displayed simultaneously.
All three are interactive and support dual pen input. But the 595Wi is also touch-enabled, allowing teachers and students to annotate on projected images using just their fingers. Up to six users can annotate simultaneously. The projector also supports gestures.
Other features include:
- Included mount;
- PC-free interactivity;
- Support for Epson's Moderator and iProjection software;
- Support for Promethean ActivInspire and Smart Notebook software; and
- Lamp life of 6,000 to 10,000 hours in eco mode.
AV ports include dual HDMI, RGB (mini D-sub 15-pin), S-video, composite video and three minijacks. Networking and control ports include wired LAN (RJ-45), USB-A, USB-B and RS-232C.
Further specs were not available at press time.
All three are expected to be available in April. The 595Wi will run $1,799; the 585Wi will be $1,599; and the entry-level 575Wi will run $1,499.
Epson also launched four non-interactive, LCD-based ultra-short-throw projectors in the PowerLite series: the 570, 575W, 580, and 585W.
The PowerLite 570 offers an XGA resolution (1,024 x 768), a brightness of 2,700 lumens and a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. It has a throw ratio of 0.31 to 0.42. It will be available in April for $999. The 575W offers a WXGA resolution and a throw ratio of 0.27 to 0.37. It will be available in April for $1,049.
The PowerLite 580 has an XGA resolution but offers a higher brightness than the 570 — 3,200 lumens. It as a throw ratio of 0.31 to 0.42. It will be available in April for $1,049. The WXGA PowerLite 585W has a brightness of 3,300 lumens and a throw ratio of 0.27 to 0.37. It will be available in April for $1,199.
