Channel One Cues Up New Online Video Library

Channel One News is adding a new searchable education video library focused on helping students locate sources around current events and related topics, such as politics and healthcare.

The online library, available to the channel’s subscribers, will include more than 2,200 videos culled from past Channel One news segments, searchable by grade level, keyword, or topic. Around half the videos also have searchable text transcripts.

Educators can also filter videos by the skills or strategies they help impart, like critical thinking or compare/contrast, and add pre-made interactive elements, like quizzes or writing prompts, to help build lessons around the videos. In the future, the company may group multiple videos around climate change, Hurricane Katrina, or other themes.

According to Sharleen Smith, the network’s general manager of digital products, the library was created in part to help cater to emerging teaching styles rooted in technology. "Over the last few years, we’ve recognized several simultaneous needs in the teaching community: educators are looking to seamlessly integrate more current events into their lesson plans," she said in a statement. "They’re adopting new teaching environments like BYOD and flipped classroom; and many of them are looking to align their daily lesson plans to newly-implemented standards."
