Chromebooks See Minor Contraction as Tablets Continue Plunge

Four of the top-5 tablet makers saw double-digit declines in shipments in the second quarter of 2023 — including Apple — according to recently released preliminary market data. Meanwhile Chromebooks declined only slightly in the quarter, with the top-2 companies seeing positive gains.

According to market research firm International Data Corp., worldwide tablet shipments dropped 29.9% year over year overall, with 28.3 million units shipped.

Apple, which continues to dominate the tablet market with a 37% market share, declined 16.8% year over year on tablet shipments (10.5 million units). No. 2 Samsung fell slightly more, 18.3% (5.8 million units), capturing 20.6% of the market. No. 3 Lenovo fell 38.8% to 2.1 million units. And Huawei dropped 22.9% at 1.7 million. No. 5 Xiaomi saw an increase of 41.6% in the second quarter, hitting 1 million units. All others combined dropped 49.7% and accounted for 25.3% of the tablet market in terms of shipments (7.2 million units).

On the Chromebook front, No. 1 HP was a huge winner, seeing an increase of 69.2% units shipped (1.6 million units total), capturing 26.9% of the Chromebook market.

No. 2 Lenovo saw more modest gains of 3.1%, coming in at 1.3 million units.

The remaining top-5 manufacturers all saw declines, Dell at –14.9% (1.3 million units), Acer at –20.7% (1.1 million units), and ASUS at –24.7% (0.2 million units).

All other Chromebook manufacturers combined lost 37.7% durng the quarter, accounting for 6% of the market (0.3 million units).
